Homemade Caramel Sauce

3/4 cup butter
1 1/2 cups firmly packed brown sugar
2 T. water
1/4 tsp. salt
3/4 cup evaporated milk
1 T. vanilla extract
Combine butter, brown sugar, water, and salt in a medium sauce pan, over medium heat. Stir constantly. Bring to a boil for about 5 minutes depending upon thickness desired. (When we doubled the recipe we did closer to 8 minutes.) Remove from heat and stir in evaporated milk and vanilla. The sauce will thicken as it cools.
